L03 Editing Process

I tried to get as many print screens as possible throughout the project as I felt that it would help me roll through the project better. So this blog has become like a diary of my digital work throughou this entire project and has proved a very useful point of reference.

The first thing that I did with my unedited images way to change the brightness and contrast so that they could all fit in with the dark , electronic format that can be see throughout the Digipak and booklet.

One I was happy with the main properties of the image and how it looks I began to add my text layers in , I centered all of the text , put it in bold , and enlarged it as I wanted each side of the Digipak to be filled with about %75 text with the background just creeping through.

Font : Blackout Std

Font Size : 150

After experimeting with many different fonts and getting opinions from other members of the class I decided to stick with this one because it seemed to best suit the format of my Digipak , so I made sure to make a note of it as I knew I would need this information later on in my project in the final stages of the editing process/

Once I was happy with the typography I began applying new filters
to the text and the background images such as ripple effects , lens flares ...

Once I was happy with the finished project and had made a few tweaks using effects and adjustment tools I merged all the layers together by clicking the flatten image button which can be found by right clicking your'e background in the layers menu.

One of the first things that I did with every image was to adjust the brightness and contrast so that each image was better suited to the Digipak.

Brightness and contrast is an incredibly important thing to bare in mind when it comes to any kind of photography , digital design or graphic work as different brightness's and contrasts provoke different emotions in people.

For example the dark makes people thing of scary , evil , creepy things which is why a lot of rock and metal artists use them where as dance music tends to use alot of really bright , postive colours that you would associate with upbeat music.

It is also sometimes neccesary because text layers can sometimes not work to full effective if their placed on the wrong colours.

The original image was far too bright for me to place white text on but I wanted to maintain the format and decided that i would keep the white text , consequently this meant that I would have to lower the brightness and tweak the contrast so that the text came through properly and you could still make out the background.

L02

This is a print screen of all the sides of the Digipak laid flat , the Indesign version has the top row upside down so it comes out the right way round after the printing process.

My project has been organised in a professional and easily manageable format from the moment we were handed the briefs.

I knew exactly what pieces of software I was going to need (Photoshop for image manipulation)
and In design for using my six page digipak template.

L02

As I began creating my Digipak I had to think about what sort of imagery the music on my CD would make people imagine , so I began making a list of some of the characteristics and traits that the music contains.

-Electronic
-Upbeat
-Modern
-Dark
-Urban
-Dance
-Party

It needs to have an urban , street , young , modern feel to it as these are the traits that my demographic look for in their media products.

Another important thing that I wanted to try and tie into the Digipak was the graffiti that influenced me and my music , so I began gathering some images online so I had a point of reference whilst creating the Digipak.

I wanted the Digipak to have clean and simple look to it ,I feel that simplicity is of the most important things to bare in mind when working with imagery.

All these images sum up how I want my finished product to look , I want it to have a dark , grainy , urban gritty feel to it whilst at the same time remaining simple and effective.

Here are some example of album covers that are likely to influence me in the creative process.

I like the use of bright colours on the UKF poster and this is something I am likely to include in my Digipak , I also like the clear , simple and bold logo design that they have come up with.

The artic monkeys one stood out to me for the one reason that it is simple.
I also like the grainy , vintage sort of look that it carries.

This is an album created by Noisia and I think its a very clever and original idea.
Its this kind of new and original idea that makes CD's stand out more than others to a potential customer.

This is the second of the two UKF graphics and I prefer the use of colours in this one as their more eye catching than the green one.

This is the front cover for my 6 Page Digipak
Its simple , interesting and I have had some positive
feedback on it from other members of my class.

Using just simple editing techniques I tweaked the image
so that it fits in perfectly with the other pages of my Digipak.

This was one of the Left Inside page that I designed
because I had to adjust the image so that
white text could be placed on top of it
whilst still allowing it to be readable.

I convereted this image to black and white as
I felt that it suited the Digipak better , the original
colours weren't really suited to the format but I
feel that this simple change had a dramatic effect.

I tweaked the contrast on the paint splats so that the
white stood out more on the black background.

I also applied a blur filter to this layer.

I changed this photo to black and white then applied
a blur filter too it.

I changed this image to greyscale and applied a few
different random artisic filters to try and get a nice
final image and I feel that it worked.

In conclusion I think that my Digipak came together very
well and I am pleased with the end result , throughout this
project I have developed my skills in photoshop and Indesign
and will be using them in the future to design artwork ,
Digipaks and album covers for my independant record label.

L01 : Analysing Digi Paks

Number one : This Digipak is for a band called "King Lizard"

Their a rock band and like many other rock bands they have a dark Digipak with pictures of the band on. But they have put their own twist on it by turning the band members into characters.

Number Two : This is the Rhianna Digipak for her album "LOUD"

Rhianna is a Pop singer.

Number Three : This is a Digipak for the Gorrilaz album demon days

Gorillaz are an indie/dance band.

After analysing these three digipaks on a critical level I feel that I futher understand what appeals to people and have come to the conclusion that Digipaks/Album Covers need to be a visual representation of the music on the CD e.g. metal and rock albums often have predominetly darker colours on.

Here are some of the pictures I intend to use for my digipak ,
although I might change my ideas and some pictures
might just not work with the format.

I really like this picture but I am slightly concerned
that it might be too dark to fit in with the rest of the
Digipak.

This picture is perfect for my Digipak and I am really
likely to use it in my final piece.

I love this digital artwork and will probably incoporate
it into my Digipak

Graffiti plays an important part in my life and
has shapped my music taste , so I am going
to include a few graff
